A study by Caucasus University Professor Tengiz Verulava and Dachi Verulava, a student at the University’s School of Medicine, has been published in Clinical Medicine & Research, a U.S.-based international peer-reviewed journal. The article, “Injury Epidemiology in Emergency Departments in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia: A Multicenter Study,” appears in Volume 24, Issue 3, pages 123–136.

The study was conducted through a collaboration between Caucasus University’s School of Medicine and the Academician Vakhtang Bochorishvili Clinic.

The study aimed to assess the epidemiological profile of trauma and injuries among patients treated in emergency departments. Conducted across multidisciplinary hospitals in Tbilisi, this retrospective multicenter study included 12,563 cases recorded in 2025.

Men accounted for 67% of patients, and 51% of cases involved people aged 17–65. Falls (47%) and road traffic incidents (16%) were the leading causes of injury. Contusions and fractures were the most common injury types, with the upper limbs and head being the most frequently affected areas. Forty percent of injuries occurred at home. Sixty-two percent of patients arrived at the emergency department by ambulance, and nearly half (48.2%) arrived within one hour of injury. Overall, 20.1% required hospitalization or intensive care.

Multivariable analysis showed that road traffic injuries were associated with a significantly greater likelihood of requiring hospital treatment. Patients over the age of 65 and those injured in rural areas were also more likely to require hospital treatment.

The findings highlight the need to strengthen injury prevention, improve road and home safety, enhance prehospital emergency care, and develop a standardized national injury surveillance system in Georgia.
