A research paper by Tengiz Verulava, Professor at Caucasus University, has been published in the international peer-reviewed scientific journal Dusunen Adam Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences. The article is entitled “Primary Care Physicians’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Clinical Practices Regarding the Management of Anxiety and Depressive Disorders in Georgia.”
The study examines primary care physicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and clinical practices in managing anxiety and depressive disorders in Georgia.
A total of 78 primary care physicians participated in the study. The findings revealed that pharmacological treatment remains the predominant approach to managing mental health conditions: 78.2% of physicians reported using pharmacotherapy, while fewer than 13% employed structured psychological interventions. The study also found that physicians felt significantly more confident in recognizing and managing anxiety disorders than in addressing depression.
The findings highlight the importance of strengthening primary mental health care services in Georgia by providing primary care physicians with practical training in psychological interventions, developing appropriate funding mechanisms, and more extensively integrating mental health specialists into multidisciplinary primary care teams.
