Caucasus University will host a presentation of Iran: Empire of the Mind on 25 November at 16:00 in the University’s Conference Hall.
Written by British scholar, author and commentator Michael George Andrew Axworthy, who headed the Iran Section of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1998 to 2000, the book explores one of the world’s great civilizations - a country with a complex past and an equally complex present. As Axworthy observes, Iran is often seen today as hostile, opaque and closed to the outside world. Beyond the sensational headlines and political rhetoric, however, lies a nation of extraordinary intellectual richness and cultural depth, whose influence has extended far beyond its neighbors and the Middle East to shape the wider world.
Why translate this book?
Caucasus University Press has already published a history of Georgia covering the period from antiquity to the twenty-first century, also available in English, Russian, Persian and Turkish. We regard the study of our ancient nation’s heroic history as a privilege. Yet we also recognize that Georgia’s history cannot be understood in isolation. Our development has been shaped by close interaction with neighboring peoples, and our fortunes have long been intertwined with theirs. To understand our own past fully, we must also understand the histories of the nations alongside which we have lived and developed through centuries of change and upheaval.
Iran: Empire of the Mind is the first fruit of a long-held ambition. It will be followed by further works on the histories of other nations and civilizations, offering balanced accounts by authors committed to historical objectivity.
