Methodological training seminar of medical education

The Caucasus School of Medicine and Healthcare Management (CMS) and the Caucasus University Training Center of the have launched a cycle of methodological training-seminars "Fundamentals of Modern Medical Education" for the methodological training of the school's academic staff. Class I of the cycle - "Paradigm shift: from teaching medicine to mastering the skills of the doctor of the future" was held on January 12, 2023. The seminar was prepared in Europe according to the materials of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) special course - Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME) and was led by the affiliated professor of the Caucasus University Medicine Program - Zviad Kirtava and the associate professor - Sofio Tatishvili, they have completed the ESME international certified course at the seminars of AMEE President Prof. Trevor Gibbs, which are held in Georgia by the AMEE International Cooperation Center.

 

The following topical issues were discussed within the seminar:

 

  • Medical education today and challenges, 3 levels of learning and outcomes, student-centered learning;
  • The goal of modern medical education; outcome and competency-based education;
  • Roles and functions of modern lecturer-educator;
  • Feedback as effective student motivation;
  • The essence, meaning, forms and difficulties of assessment.

 

The director of the AMEE International Cooperation Center in Georgia, TSU professor, Gaiane Simonia, welcomed the participants of the seminar through Zoom and wished them success.

 

The participants of the seminar were 14 lecturers of the English-language one-cycle program of CMS, including 2 professors and 1 assistant professor. After completing the pre-test and post-test, the trainees were issued certificates confirming the completion of the training. According to the sectoral characteristics of higher medical education, it is necessary for each medical lecturer to undergo this type of training every 2 years.

 

According to the presenter of the course, the director of the academic program of medicine, professor Zviad Kirtava, within the cycle, 3-4 more seminars will be held - on curriculum, modern methods of evaluations (OSCE - objective structured clinical examination, workplace evaluation), electronic portfolio, and other topical issues.
