Natia Katamadze, an affiliated associate professor at the Caucasus School of Medicine, attended the International Scientific Conference on Internal Medicine (ECIM 2025), one of the largest international events in the medical community.
She was invited as a speaker to present on the topic, “The Role of Probiotics in the Treatment of Prediabetes.”
This topic addresses the significant issue of how intestinal microflora influences the progression of diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance. The intestinal barrier plays an important role in the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of the study was to investigate the improvement of carbohydrate metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance by restoring the intestinal flora. The colon microflora assessment revealed qualitative data on colon bacteria and their changes in dynamics during treatment. It was revealed that the inclusion of probiotics for a long time had a positive effect on almost all gastrointestinal complaints. These data are consistent with several experimental and clinical studies, which revealed a close relationship between carbohydrate metabolism and intestinal microflora.
The results of the study were presented as a poster presentation at the European Congress of Internal Medicine - ECIM 2025 in Florence.
