Oxford University Professor's Seminar ,,Ukraine at the frontline of Russia’s challenge to international order''

2 November 2023

On November 1, the Caucasus School of Governance hosted Professor Roy Allison, the Director of Russia and East European Studies at the Oxford School of Global and Regional Studies. During the meeting, Professor Allison familiarized himself with the school activities, its programs, and the ongoing research activities.

As part of his visit, Professor Roy Allison conducted a seminar on the subject of "Ukraine at the frontline of Russia's challenge to international order." During this seminar, he spoke about Russia's reasoning for its actions in Ukraine in terms of international law, global norms, and political motivations. Prof. Allison noted that to justify a war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia presented a variety of legal, quasi-legal and normative claims, along with political rhetoric and transparent revanchism.

Following the opening remarks, a discussion took place involving doctoral and master's students. Professor Roy Allison emphasized that Russia's manipulation of legal and normative discourse is not only aimed at rationalizing its full-scale illegal military aggression but also represents a significant challenge to basic global rules and norms. It was noted during the meeting that the ongoing international legal response and strong opposition from the international community show the functionality and resistance of international norms.
