Caucasus University Archeological Expedition

On July 5-18, Caucasus University sent an archeological expedition to Zemo (Upper) Imereti, the leader of which was a professor of Caucasus University, PhD in History Mr. Zurab Bragvadze. The expedition members were Bachelor’s degree students of Caucasus School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

 

The expedition explored 250 square meters of territory to discover strategically well placed dwellings currently in ruins. According to the archeologists estimates the ruins date back to different eras beginning from the VIII BC to VIII AD. The expedition revealed pre-archaic period (VIII-VII BC) and late archaic period settlements (IV AD). It is noteworthy that it is the first time settlement dating back to the late antique era has been revealed in Zemo Imereti. The expedition also discovered an VIII century tower, which is a contemporary of Sveri fortress.

 

Archeological excavations will proceed on the territory in future as well.
