HIGHER EDUCATION IN GEORGIA

 

Higher education in Georgia consists of three stages: the bachelor program, master program and doctorate program.

 

Stage I. The educational program in each institution of higher education during one academic year includes earning 60 credits on average. The educational program of the first stage of teaching (bachelor programs) consists of no less than 240 credits. The first stage of higher education may include an educational program of teacher’s training. Only holders of state-authorized certificates confirming full general education or persons equalized with them, have a right to study in a bachelor program.

 

Stage II. The educational program of second stage of teaching (master programs) consists of no less than 120 credits. Only bachelors or persons with degrees equalized with them have a right to study in master programs. Medical/dentist educational programs is a one-stage higher educational program, which ends with awarding academic degrees as certified physician/dentist. Academic degrees received after completing the educational program of physician with 360 credits or dentist with 300 credits, is equalized with an academic degree of master.

 

Stage III. The third stage of studying (doctorate programs) consists of no less than 180 credits. Only masters or persons with degrees equalized with them, have a right to study in doctoral programs.

 

After the completion of each stage of higher education, respective diplomas are issued. Each Institution of higher education is authorized to award students with intermediate qualifications, in case of completing a component part of an educational program. Awarding an intermediate qualification is allowed after reaching the results in studying defined for completing a part of an educational program, which should not be less than half of the credit number defined for an educational program.

 

                                                  

 

 

Types of Higher Education Institutions in Georgia

 

In Georgia, three types of higher education institutions are active:

 

Type I: University. A university is an institution of higher education which carries out higher educational programs of all three stages and scientific research.

 

Type II: Teaching University. A teaching university is an institution of higher education which delivers higher educational program(s) at the second stage (master programs). These institutions can award the master degree, but cannot award the doctorate degree.

 

Type III: College. A college is an institution of higher education which carries out only first stage educational programs of higher academic education. Obtaining the status of an institution of higher education and the implementation of respective educational activity is possible only in the case of the authorization of higher education institution defined by the rules of the authorization provision. Authorization is a procedure of obtaining the status of a higher education institution, the purpose of which is to ensure compliance with education standards necessary for implementation of respective activities required for issuing of the education confirming document recognized by the state. Authorization is carried out by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, according to the rules defined by the authorization provision. The state recognizes only diplomas issued by accredited educational institutions, or those equalized with them.

 

Unified National Education Examinations in Georgia

 

For acceptance to the institutions of higher education, in bachelor and certified physician/dentist educational programs, only those applicants who have completed respective Unified National Examinations, according to the rule defined by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, have a right to be admitted and study.

 

In higher educational institutions of Orthodox theologian direction, enrollment of students in a bachelor theologian educational program is carried out on the basis of the proposal presented by the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, according to the rule defined by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, on the basis of result obtained in certain subjects of Unified National Examinations. The National Examinations Center is a legal entity of public law which ensures execution of Unified National and Joint Master Examinations, and is authorized to carry out national estimations and international research, and carrying out other authorities defined by Georgian legislation.
