On october 28, 3:00 PM A public lecture will be organized by the International Research Center for the Georgian studies at Caucasus University on the topic “Georgia on Old European Maps.”
The lecture will be delivered by Sulkhan Saladze, co-founder and director of Mappa Cartografica.
Lecture will be held t the Library of the CU/Main hall of the University.
The lecture will cover:
- The age of European cartography and the earliest appearances of Georgia on maps;
- Is Georgia Europe, Asia, or the Caucasus?
- The depiction of Georgia on maps with antique themes – Colchis and Iberia;
- Mappa Mundi maps and the Golden Fleece;
- Portolan charts and Georgia’s five-cross flag;
- The “birth certificate” of GEORGIA;
- Sulkhan-Saba and Vakhushti Batonishvili – the contribution of Georgians to the development of European cartography;
- From GEORGIA to the Caucasus.
Duration: 60–70 minutes.

Sulkhan Saladze – Co-founder and Director of Mappa Cartografica since 2024. His research focuses on the depiction of Georgia on old European maps, from the ancient period through the 20th century.
From 2018 to 2020, he served as Chair of the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association.
In 2019, Sulkhan Saladze’s book, “Unknown Old Adjara,” won the SABA Prize in the category of Best Documentary Prose.
