Language politics and political discourse - case of Georgia

On June 17, at 17:00, at the Chavchavadze Center, a joint public lecture will be held by the Caucasus University International Center for Georgian Studies and the Ilia Chavchavadze Center for European Studies and Civic Education on the topic: “Language Policy and Political Discourse (the Case of Georgia).”

 

The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Mariam Manjgaladze, Professor at Caucasus University and Doctor of Philology.

The lecture will cover the following topics regarding language policy in Georgia:

 

  • A brief overview of the historical context (prior to the 20th century);
  • Language policy of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia;
  • The Soviet period;
  • The post-Soviet period;
  • The Organic Law on the State Language;
  • The State Language Development Strategy;
  • Weaknesses in the enforcement mechanisms of the law;
  • Problematic issues regarding knowledge / lack of knowledge of the state language.
