Public Lecture - “Censorship and Post-Censorship Art”

2 December 2025

On December 3, 3PM a the International Research Center on Georgia at Caucasus University will host a public lecture on the topic “Censorship and Post-Censorship Art.”

The lecture will be delivered by Keti Gurdjize (Professor at Caucasus University, Head of the English Philology Program) and Tatia Mtvarelidze (Assistant professor at Caucasus University). It will take place in the Caucasus University Library.

Lecture will be held აt the Library of the CU.

The lecture will discuss the consequences of restrictions on freedom of expression in art and their impact not only during periods of direct censorship but also in the post-censorship era. The burden of silenced words, “lost truths,” and thus unrecognized events or processes weighs heavily on both art and society. Censorship disrupts the natural flow of artistic development, reassessment, and reinterpretation of tradition, which affects not only the arts but also society and the broader development of free thought.

The lecture will focus on the following topics:

  • Direct and indirect censorship (direct political prohibitions or the indirect social tabooing of certain topics; direct and indirect control by the artistic “elite”)
  • What does hidden influence in the post-censorship period mean?
  • When is art political, and what does the political nature of art entail?
