On May 7, at 10:30, Caucasus University Library will host a public lecture by Professor Sergo Vardosanidze, Doctor of Historical Sciences, on the topic “Christianity 1700 - Patriarch Ilia II and His Legacy.”
In 2026, Georgia marks the 1700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion - a landmark date of profound significance for the identity, spiritual heritage, and cultural history of the Georgian people.
The Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church has a rich and distinguished history. Across different historical periods, the Catholicos-Patriarchs played an essential role in spreading and strengthening Christianity, as well as in preserving its close connection with Georgian national identity. Among them, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II holds a particularly significant place as a great spiritual leader and peacemaker.
Professor Sergo Vardosanidze, a distinguished scholar of Georgian Church history, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and Professor, has devoted many years to studying the life and work of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II. During the lecture, he will discuss important and compelling aspects of Patriarch Ilia II’s legacy and contribution.
