On December 10, at 17:00, the Caucasus University Library will host a public lecture titled “David Marshall Lang’s Contribution to Kartvelology.” The event is organized by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Sveta Barbakadze, Doctor of Philology and invited lecturer at Caucasus University. Dr. Barbakadze is an active participant in international academic conferences, where she regularly presents the findings of her research.
The lecture will focus on a comprehensive examination of the renowned British Kartvelologist David Marshall Lang’s seminal 1956 publication, Lives and Legends of the Georgian Saints. The session will include a comparative analysis of ten Georgian hagiographic texts translated into English by Lang.
The discussion will explore the linguistic, stylistic, and structural features of Lang’s translations and assess their correspondence to the original Georgian texts. This analysis highlights a significant milestone in the development of English-language Kartvelology and offers valuable insight into how Lang’s volume became one of the key sources shaping Western understanding and scholarly study of Georgian culture and hagiographic literature.
The lecture will provide students and other interested attendees with a deeper appreciation of the linguistic and stylistic nuances of Lang’s translations and their broader scholarly relevance.
