Salon conversations Language and Ideology: The Linguistic Dimension of Political Discourse

On February 26 at 16:00, the International Research Center for Georgian Studies at Caucasus University will host a Salon conversations titled Language and Ideology: The Linguistic Dimension of Political Discourse.

 

The lecture will be delivered by Mariam Manjgaladze, Professor at Caucasus University and Head of the BA Program in Georgian Philology.

Lecture Overview

 

The lecture will explore the intersection of language, power, and political communication, focusing on how linguistic choices shape public discourse and ideological narratives. Key topics include:

 

– Language as an instrument of power
– Historical paradigms of language policy in Georgia
– Contemporary challenges and the legislative framework
– The language of politicians in the public sphere: vocabulary, rhetoric, and etiquette
– Hate speech and manipulative strategies in the modern context

 

Speaker Profile

 

Mariam Manjgaladze leads the Bachelor’s Program in Georgian Philology. Her research focuses primarily on modern Georgian language studies and encompasses computational linguistics, language policy, and sociolinguistics.

 

She has authored more than 70 academic publications and has been involved in over 30 international projects as a researcher, scientific supervisor, or project manager. She is a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship of Georgia for Young Researchers and scholarships from the German Government (2009–2012). She was also a Marie Curie Fellow in 2015–2016.

 

Professor Manjgaladze has delivered lectures in Lithuania, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Italy. She is a member of the Expert Commission of the State Language Department, a co-founder of the Association for Language Modeling, and serves on the scientific boards of several international forums.
