The Caucasus Medicine School and the Caucasus University Training Center are conducting a methodological training seminar series titled "Fundamentals of Modern Medical Education" for the methodological training of the school’s academic staff. On June 25, 2025, the second session of the series was held, focusing on "Modern Methods of Teaching-Learning and Assessment - Advantages and Challenges."
The seminar was developed using materials from the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) special courses: "Basic Skills in Medical Education and Methods of Assessment of Medical Education" (ESME and ESMEA). The training was led by AMEE International Certified Trainers Professor Zviad Kirtava, Academic Director of the Caucasus University Medicine Program, and visiting lecturer Mariam Velijanashvili.
The seminar addressed several key topics:
- Problem-Based Learning and Case-Based Learning - important types of modern teaching and learning methodology - advantages and challenges (Mariam Velijanashvili);
- The importance of student assessment; Feedback as a motivational factor;
- MCQ-test - strengths, weaknesses, individual types, benefits and limitations;
- Organization, selection, adaptation and evaluation of written tests, quality assurance methods.
The seminar was attended by academic staff from the Caucasus Medicine School and visiting lecturers. Participants received certificates of completion.
Several additional seminars are planned, covering CBCR (Case-Based Clinical Analysis), OSCE (Objectively Structured Clinical Examination), WPBA (Workplace Assessment), and electronic portfolio management.
Given the specialized nature of higher medical education, medical lecturers are required to undergo methodological training every two years. The Sectoral Council of Higher Medical Education is currently addressing the implementation of such training programs and the identification of qualified trainers.
