On February 28, a mock trial dedicated to issues of copyright infringement was conducted in the courtroom of Caucasus University for students of public and private schools. The initiative was jointly organized by the School of Law and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, reflecting an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary legal education.
The event was structured in two comprehensive segments. In the first part, participants attended a public lecture on intellectual property law, with particular emphasis on current challenges in the field of copyright protection. They were also introduced to the procedural framework of judicial proceedings, including the roles, rights, and obligations of the parties involved in litigation.
The second segment featured an immersive simulated court proceeding. Participants assumed the roles of judge, claimant, defendant, legal representatives of both parties, and witnesses. The case scenario, presented during the initial session by composer Mika Mdinaradze, addressed a practical issue related to copyright and television performance. Drawing upon the legal principles and contextual information provided, the students conducted the hearing in a realistic courtroom setting, presenting structured arguments, defending their respective positions, and engaging in substantive legal debate. Particular attention was devoted to the juridical analysis of facts, the coherent formulation of legal reasoning, and the effective protection of copyright interests.
The primary objective of the activity was to enhance awareness of complex issues in intellectual property law through coordinated academic engagement and to cultivate a deeper interest in law, justice, and legal reasoning among prospective students.
The mock trial was supervised by Nino Kharitonashvili, Affiliated Professor at Caucasus University and a practicing notary, who provided professional guidance throughout the proceedings.
Prospective students were introduced to the composer Mika Mdinaradze’s perspectives, insights into existing challenges in the field of copyright, and the case-based scenario to be examined during the proceedings.
Following the conclusion of the simulated trial, all participants were awarded certificates in recognition of their active involvement and demonstrated engagement.
