The Caucasus School of Medicine (CMS) and the Caucasus University Training Center are organizing a series of methodological training seminars titled "Fundamentals of Modern Medical Education" to provide methodological training for the academic staff of the school. On January 24, 2024, the first session of the cycle, titled "Paradigm Change: From Teaching Medicine to Mastering the Skills of the Future Doctor," took place.
The seminar is prepared based on the materials from the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) special course - Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME). Professor Zviad Kirtava, the academic head of the Medicine Program at Caucasus University, and Associate Professor Sofio Tatishvili led the training session.The following topical issues were discussed within the seminar:
Contemporary medical education and its challenges, the three levels of learning and outcomes; student-centered learning.
- The purpose of medical education;outcome and competency-based education.
- Roles and functions of modern lecturer-educator;
- Feedback as effective student motivation; Portfolio as a student self-organization mechanism;
- The essence, meaning, forms and difficulties of assessment.
The seminar was attended by the academic staff of the Caucasus School of Medicine and invited lecturers. Upon completing the pre-test and post-test assessments, participants received certificates confirming their completion of the training.
Two additional courses are planned to be held before the end of the semester: one on modern methods of assessing practical skills (OSCE - Objective Structured Clinical Examination, workplace evaluation), and another on electronic portfolios.
In accordance with the sectoral characteristics of higher medical education, it is necessary for each medical lecturer to undergo methodological training every 2 years.
