Public Lecture: Nikoloz Baratashvili and Giacomo Leopardi - two European romantics

14 April 2026

On April 14, at 14:00, within the framework of the project “I Love Georgian - My State Language!”, a public lecture will be held by Luigi Magarotto - Italian Kartvelologist, translator, professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and foreign member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences - titled: Nikoloz Baratashvili (1817–1845) and Giacomo Leopardi (1798–1837) - two European romantics.

Nikoloz Baratashvili and Giacomo Leopardi developed as poets in completely different contexts; however, in the works of both Romantic poets, the mysterious voice of nature holds a significant place.

As the scholar notes, unlike Baratashvili, the worldview of the twenty-year-old Leopardi appears more instinctive and resolute.

From Nikoloz Baratashvili’s works, Luigi Magarotto will discuss the poem “The Fate of Kartli” as well as the following poems: “Merani,” “The Grave of King Irakli,” and “The Hyacinth and the Hermit.”

Professor Gaga Shurgaia of the University of Naples “L’Orientale” will give a brief presentation on the biography of Luigi Magarotto.

The meeting will be held online via the Zoom platform.
